Cia-Agricoltori Italiani is one of the largest trade organizations in Italy and Europe. It works to safeguard and enhance the primary sector and to protect businesses and farmers.
Founded in 1977 as Cic-Confederazione Italiana Coltivatori (Italian Farmers’ Confederation), a spin-off of the 1955 National Farmers’ Alliance, it became Cia-Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori (Italian Farmers’ Confederation) in 1992.
The organization’s priorities include protecting farmers’ incomes, establishing the primary sector in the Italian and global economic system, ensuring business competitiveness on the market, revitalizing rural areas, and protecting the rights of agricultural workers engaged in business. Cia works daily for increasingly sustainable agriculture, focusing on quality, safety, biodiversity, food education, and environmental and soil protection.
Cia-Agricoltori Italiani has its national headquarters in Rome and is present in approximately 5,000 Italian municipalities, with regional, provincial, and local offices, as well as a representative office in Brussels. It is a member of COPA (Committee of Professional Agricultural Organizations of the European Union) and OMA (World Farmers’ Organization).
The Confederation’s commitment is to guarantee the rights and safeguard the 650,000 members and 170,000 associated agricultural businesses throughout Italy.
CIA also provides a voice to approximately 350,000 retirees (Anp), supports approximately 37,000 young people (Agia), and supports 10,000 female entrepreneurs (Donne in Campo).
Among the multifunctional sectors, approximately 4,500 agritourism businesses (Turismo Verde), 9,500 organic farms (Anabio), and 5,000 short-chain businesses (La Spesa in Campagna) stand out. More recently, founded in 2020, is PescAgri, the Association for the protection, development, and valorization of fishing and aquaculture in all its professional and territorial aspects.
Cia also relies on the Agricoltura è Vita Association, which focuses on training, research, and outreach, and boasts a leading nonprofit organization (ASeS – Agricoltori Solidarietà e Sviluppo). Finally, the Confederation also promotes Esco Agroenergetica and Aiel, the Italian Agroforestry Energy Association.
