Purpose:

Veneto is a wine-growing region with ancient traditions and a rich heritage of native varieties, the result of centuries-old biological, historical and environmental processes. This heritage is being drastically depleted due to the demands of an increasingly globalised market. The results are ecological and landscape simplification, the loss of ancient cultivars and the consequent irreversible disappearance of historic rural landscapes. Preserving, protecting and enhancing agricultural biodiversity represents value both for the sustainability of environmental systems and for the identity, economic and food-related aspects of local communities.

Expected Results:

The project aims to preserve and enhance the biodiversity of ancient resilient grapevine varieties, both wine and fruit varieties, through the study, recovery and reproduction of genetic material, the promotion of cultural and educational events, food-related research and the creation of short supply chain models for direct sales. To this end, an educational garden will be created for the cultivation of the Vitis Labrusca variety, together with an experimental vineyard for planting ancient wine cultivars at risk of extinction. A further objective is the inclusion of Manzoni Bianco in the National Register of Grapevine Varieties and the achievement of a distinctive DOCG designation. Collaborations with qualified research and innovation bodies are planned.
