MELE ANTICHE MONFUMO

The Association of Ancient Apples of Monfumo APS was officially established in 2011 under the name “community of producers of ancient apples of Monfumo, adopting its own bylaws to pursue the aims and objectives of the project of recovery, reintroduction and cultivation of ancient apple varieties. The central pivot of the name is the concept of “community,” understood as a collection of people, knowledge, and ties to the land and its resources. Currently, the community consists of about 20 small producers, each of whom has so far been assigned an average of about 40 apple trees for the creation of apple orchards located in various parts of the Monfumo area. Currently, more than 1,500 apple trees have been planted, divided into about fifteen ancient varieties chosen from those considered the best and most interesting so far catalogued or found in the area. The main purposes stated in our charter are as follows: 1. reintroduction, preservation and development of old apple and pear varieties with organic and sustainable cultivation 2. enhancement of apples and pears and their derivative products (jams, juices, apple cider) 3. recovery and development of culinary recipes using apples and pears through the involvement of all the catering activities in the area 4. organization of pruning courses and other evenings of in-depth study related to the cultivation of apples and pears.
